TOT for Social Activists and NGOs at Warangal, Andhra Pradesh on 22nd December 2011 on ‘Promotion of Communal Harmony, Peace and development”

A Report

Centre for Study of Society and Secularism conducted a Training of Trainers for Social Activists and NGOs at Warangal on 22nd December 2011 on Promotion of Communal Harmony, Peace and Development jointly with COVA, Hyderabad.

Expressing concern on the present political trends of communal politics, dividing people on caste, religion and region for selfish interests by the politicians; the speakers emphasized on promotion of better relations between people of different communities and faiths. The speakers said that political leaders are using the mask of religion and caste and exploiting the society, cheating people, and creating differences between people. The speakers were giving training (ToT) to the members from NGO’s Students, and Social Activists. They said that in the veil of religion political leaders are stopping people from reaching to the fruits of development and they are coming in to power in the areas which are in disturbance. Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer was Chief Resource Person at the ToT along with other speaker viz. Dr. Mazher Hussain, Executive Director, COVA and Mr. Narasimha Murthy, Principal, Wagdevi MBA College. Mr. Mohammed Raoof coordinated for this ToT.

Communalism is not our problem: Dr. Mazher Hussain opined that there is no difference between religions but during communal disturbances society’s problems dictates the situation. He said that some elements picturise communal tensions between people for gaining mileage of the situation. He said that religion is part of worship of god and all will have same societal needs. He said that today there is change in the situation, NGO’s and educationists are the reason behind this. The middle class has to be given education for development.

Politics Reason for Communal Tension: Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer said that communal tension in the country is the result of political situation. He said that apart from politics, economic inequalities, lack of education and understanding is also one of the reasons for communal tensions. He said that in our country police has reached its worst state. Presently people are prejudiced that only differences between Muslims and Hindus are regarded as communal disharmony. The society has to come out of such prejudice. He said that he learnt Sanskrit and many Muslims educationalists have read Vedas and Puranas. He said that religion is a belief and it is used to reach to the Almighty. Further he said that every religion in the world taught similar teachings. He said that there are many similarities in the teachings of Bhagwad Gita, Holy Qur’an, Holy Bible and Shri Guru Granth Sahib. He said that this year twenty two people lost their lives in communal violence; nine of them from Rajasthan. He said that we have to build our country with communal harmony. We need support of educationalists, journalists, professors, youth and NGO’s to win over the difficulties which are before us. In general politicians take undue advantage of poverty and make promises. But they never go to the root cause of the poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, health issues and show interest for development for namesake only.

Dr. Engineer said that in the pre-British period people lived together in complete harmony and after that, divide and rule on the basis of religion, caste, creed started and still continuing and increasing day by day. He said that today governments are treating Muslim’s with indifference and treating Muslims as terrorists, anti social elements. If some tension erupts they are targeting Muslims and arresting them anticipating as culprits? We have to urge the government not to impose differences between different groups and communities. At the time of independence when British government wanted division of the country, people were against the partition of the country. 85% people wanted India to be one country but partition was imposed on them; as a result, country was divided into two. At that time and today also religion is used in politics to divide and rule the people. He expressed grief that even though there are many religions in India communal tension develops between Hindus and Muslims only. He gave a call that our country is a secular country and every one has to work to sop communal violence.

Have to work together to conserve underground water: Dr. Panduranga Rao, retired professor of National Institute of Technology, Warangal, President, INTACH, Warangal Chapter and Advisory to Government Bobbli Project Case presided over the meeting. In his presidential remarks Dr. Panguranga Rao said that people quarrel not only in the name of religion, caste and region but also on water issues which is a natural resource given by god to His children. We have witnessed prolonged water disputes viz. Palar river water disputes between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh; dispute of Kaveri water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and also Mullaperiyar row on Tamil Nadu-Kerala water dispute. We all know that water is a necessity for living; survival of not only human being but crores of living plants and animals is dependent on water. Everyone has to work together for the conservation of water which has importance for all irrespective of caste and religion and work for promotion of communal harmony told NIT Prof.Panduranga Rao.

Mr. M.A. Rauff gave vote of thanks to all particularly to Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer who spared his valuable time to come from Mumbai to enrich knowledge of activists and NGOs on the issue. The program concluded with participation certificates distribution by Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer.
